Earthquake hits Greece and Turkey (Samos and Izmır)

Firstly, I want to talk about the seismic hazard map of turkey. We know Turkey has 3 major earthquake zone and most minor fault zone. ( You able to read fault zone of the earthquake in turkey article in this link)

2 big earthquake was lived in turkey this year.

24 January 2020: Elazıg, Mw:4.8

30 October 2020: Izmır, Mw:6.9

The map shows the Izmir and Elazıg locations. We have taken earthquakes bigger than magnitude V.

1.Seismic hazard map of Europe

The seismic hazard map of Europe (Jochen Woesneer)

The map show west of Europe countries, Italy and Turkey under the risk of earthquakes. Example In the İtaly, The 217 earthquakes occurred in October these were magnitude between 1.8 and more. For Turkey, this number is 4068 earthquakes occurred last 30 days. ( Mınumum magnitude was 1.8).

2.The Earthquake of Turkey and Samos (Greece), Mw:7 ( USGS)

Turkey and Greece felt an earthquake in the last days of October. The earthquake has occurred in the Aegean sea and that sea shallow (5267 meters) so that geoscientist has a hard time for the research this sea. By the way, Aegean sea has thousand little islands. One of these islands is Samos which the earthquake occurred.

Fault map of Samos from Spyros Pavlides (2009)

There are neotectonic characterize faults. Fault characteristics:
The Pythagorean fault has potential energy Mw:6.6 so that this fault is the essential zone. The Vathy fault and Karlovac fault can create between 6.3 and 6.3 magnitudes earthquake. Also, Samos has a big sea fault that potential has 6.8 magnitudes. . (Spyros Pavlides-2009)

The map includes historical earthquakes in Izmır area.

3.Effect on Turkey

The AFAD has shared the number of how many earthquakes occurred after The Izmir lived big shook.
The aftershock numbers reached 947 on 1 November. 43 aftershock occurred bigger than 4 magnitudes.

Also you able to watch aftershock video:

The earthquake occurred in the afternoon luckily most people weren't in the home. But the earthquake killed 114 people die and 1015 person has injured. 17 build was collapsed. Minister of environment and urbanization of Turkey M. Kurum has said “ We has examined over 75 thousand builds but more 300 builds is immediate damaged. The medium damaged build count is almost 380 and minimum hazard damaged build is 3660.

The Kandilli Institute has shared historical earthquake maps for İzmir. Also, we know west of turkey has an extensional fault system. There are many fault zone and crack zone. For this map, Izmir lived hazard earthquake in the last 200. Also,ıf earthquakes magnitudes bigger than 5.5, the tsunami potential seem. The Bodrum ( south-west of turkey) has felt an earthquake in 2017.It was 6.6 magnitude then we saw a tsunami after the earthquake.

This earthquake occurred in a normal fault. For this reason, the tectonic evolution of west Anatolian still continuous. And this earthquake is evidence for this dissertation. The aftershocks will be maximum of 1 less in this area. So we are waiting for 6 and 5.5 magnitudes.

The earthquake was very hazarded for turkey. Greece impacted very less from the earthquake. Samos (İsland of Greece ) felt that natural disaster on 30 November. 2 teenagers pass away,8 people injured and seven builds are collapsed.
